The Cambridge line had some reliability problems, which is a shame, because they would have to sound awesome if they use basically the Pathfinder circuit with an actual preamp tube, a larger Celestion speaker, and some added tone controls. I mic'ed mine up for a quick jam with friends and along with a Tele and some lightly-distorted gain, was getting some nice Page-esque tones with some nice spank and the right amount of punch without being harsh. It has a chimey tone that reminds me of an EL84 and works well for Brit-pop or older Marshall-type tones. It does have a bit of a British voice to it. I'm not sure that it actually sounds like a tube amp, but it's very responsive to for a solid state amp (at mid-gain, you can play lightly and it cleans up or strum hard for AC/DC or Who-like crunch), has a great clean sound (for a small solid-state amp), and has some good mid to high-gain tone that doesn't sound thin or buzzy like most cheap practice amps. Now, I don't know that for sure, but I'm guessing it's because the Power Engine is simply amplifying whatever signal is going into it, at 60 watts, regardless of the wattage of the signal source. I thought the VR would sound warmer than the Pathfinder, since it's got a tube. I imagine that if you plug a Vox Pathfinder into it (assuming you can to begin with), you're probably only gonna get 60 watts of power, not 75. If so, and if you're specifically talking about a Vox Pathfinder 15R, then I can tell you, from personal experience, that if you plug it into a 4X12 cab (that's a box, with four 12 inch speakers, usually arranged in a square formation and NO TUBES), it'll get plenty loud. It also has tremolo, with the usual speed and depth dials, plus volume, reverb, gain, treble, and bass knobs. Many call me a clown, but I would never show up for a gig using the '15R for power. Right off the bat the texture is better and the amp is more lively. The 15R is, of course, 15 watts, and the R stands for reverb. I just put a Weber Blue Pup AlNiCo in my '15R. You might not know that model, since it was discontinued seven years ago, after a dozen-year run. I assume you're talking about making your amp louder. Here's the rub: Carroll's amp is a Vox Pathfinder 15R. There's no way to "give" an amplifier more wattage. And yes, you will need to change the tube in a Vox Valvetronix eventually if the tube fails, or if you're just curious about how Tube A sounds as compared to Tube B. It doesnt sound very tubey or anything, but the way it acts is a bit more like a tube amp than most solid state amps. It is a combo amp, in other words, it has both the amp and the speaker in one convenient package. A "cab" is nothing more than a speaker cabinet.
